Forget the fluff… Let’s get down to business, shall we?

How do you determine if your business idea is an actual viable idea or just another hobby?

Now, I’m not knocking hobbies. I have a few myself and all are great for the health. Seriously. But when you want to go into business for yourself and start on an entrepreneurial journey that will result in your first Opening Day, this is the first thing to determine.

Hobbies can wait. Your business cannot.

Every day I hear from people who want to start a business, and boy do they all have some amazing ideas! And, just to be sure, all of them are actual. All of them are actionable. Ideas can be stretched and pumped in all directions to become living, breathing entities. People, on the other hand, are the ones who hold ideas back. And mostly because they lack the proper mindset that will propel those ideas to actuality.

So, when jumping aboard your entrepreneurial journey, be honest with yourself.

Do you really want to be in business for yourself?

If the answer is yes, then you’re going to need to make sure you are doing all you can to make that a reality!

Business or Hobby?

The #1 way to determine if your idea, your goal, your master plan is an actual viable business idea or just another hobby to answer one simple question…

Are you taking action EVERY DAY to see your idea through, or do you only work on ‘fair weather days’?

It’s easy to work at something when you have the time, the energy, the money and all the other resources you need to do so. It’s a totally different thing – and the real deal – to continually work at something, no matter what, every single day. Even if baby steps, small daily tasks add up fast toward accomplishing your goals!

Some days will need you to put in more than a baby step effort, yes. But when you’re first starting out, you may already have a full-time job, a family and more that require your time, effort, money and all the other resources they necessitate. However, that doesn’t mean that, in the meantime, you can’t do something – even if ONE THING – that will incrementally get you closer to your goal of Opening Day.

I personally use Asana to keep me organized and on track. I set a goal. Make a plan. Determine the steps, however big or small. And then do them. Every. Single. Day.

When I was writing my book, that was to get at 5am and write until the rest of the world woke up and demanded I stop. That was it. And if the world woke up at 5:15am, then at least I got in 15 minutes of writing. True. Not nearly enough. But it was something, and kept me hungry for my next 5am wakeup call. Why? Because there were always the days when the world didn’t ask anything from me for hours, hours I got to devote to writing! And yes, I actually used Asana to remind me to write every day, with their repeat due date feature. Get a notification. Write. Check the To-Do item off as done. And smile.

I find it quite satisfying to check things off a list.

Same thing goes with starting a business. You need to do so many things in order to get you from point A to Opening Day, that even if you only have 15 minutes a day to devote to your business (in the beginning), then it’s enough! If you want it, truly want it, even if it takes a little longer than planned, you’ll see it happen SO LONG AS you put in the time every single day.

So there you have it, and yes, with a little fluff. I always intend to shoot straight from the hip and not deviate, but that’s my style. I help people see what’s possible and how to accomplish it. This, seeing that to do list and all the milestones and actionable tasks to get there can be quite daunting. So I make sure to instill some easy-goingness into my work with clients. Hence I use Asana. How can you grimace and pout when you get flying unicorns across your screen after completing a task?! That, and I treat with cookies and pizza… Just ask any of my past co-workers. Even the ones I worked with overseas. Try ordering pizza online for your co-workers in Ireland when you’re located in Baltimore. Just need to get up at 4am to do so, and let your credit card company know what you’re doing. 🙂

Like I said, all ideas are viable! You just have to put in the effort and make it happen!

So, since I always ask the questions you HAVE to hear in order to get you from point A to Opening Day…

What are YOU doing TODAY to help you get to your goal?

If you want to chat with me personally, I’m always over at For Creative Entrepreneurs, and I personally love to hear what you’re doing or helping people figure that out in the Let’s Do This! forum.

Big. Small. Quick. Long. Any task you do today IS THE BEST task you can do today. No matter the size, all tasks add up to big goals.

So long as you keep moving forward, you’ll get there. I promise!
